Most of the health care providers I’ve seen are just as you’ve described. This is one reason I’m reluctant to seek treatment even when I have a cold. I’m still suffering with a bout of bronchitis. Some doctors have made elitist remarks and comments that hint at racial bias, if not outright prejudice. One doctor treated me quite harshly before an operation in 2006. The contempt in his voice was chilling. I had a therapist last year who lacked empathy and actually ridiculed me in sessions, which is why I stopped seeing her.I have insurance. But I look much younger than my actual age and my race/ethnicity is ambiguous to most people because of my appearance. This is what allows some folks, including those in medicine, to feel that they can treat me as a lesser being. Some health care providers will not answer questions straight up. And the annoyance is obvious with some of them. They have no empathy if you’re not on their socioeconomic level. I know you work in that field, so please don’t think I’m bashing doctors in general. I’ve had some positive experiences but for the most part I try to avoid clinical settings.
